Wow, the last time I was here I was supposed to finish the story about Pizzeria Delfina in San Francisco. Suffice it to say that the food there is excellent Italian, but probably the best thing about it is that you can order -- and get served -- a bottle of wine while you're standing in line waiting for a table to become available. Something we're unlikely to see in Canada for a while...
Since then, many meals have passed. This past weekend was the Spot Prawn Festival put on by the Chefs' Table Society. The picture was taken by Travis right down at Fishermen's Wharf by Granville Island. I paid $12 / lb, which seemed a decent enough price, but this thread on Chow Hound from last year seems to indicate that maybe you can get them much cheaper in Chinatown? I will have to investigate...the spot prawn season only lasts about 6 - 8 weeks: the boats come in between 4:30 and 5:30pm every evening, apparently. But on to what I constructed from the prawns...
Fresh prawns in hand, Travis and I were preparing to leave when I noticed some people snapping the heads off and throwing them into the ocean. I rushed over to reclaim them to make prawn broth from, which became the first of three courses of prawn deliciousness. The rest of my pictures are here.
OK, this is turning into a monster post so I am going to wrap it up by pointing to a couple of other blogs / people.
First of all, many thanks go to Kai, who is off in China at the moment. In closing down and clearing out her place here, I was the lucky recipient of what Rachael and I have been calling "Kai foods" -- leftover stuff from her fridge that found a good home in our fridges and now bellies. I also bought a crock pot from her, and the christening of it was filled with Kai food: leg of lamb with Kai pickled garlic and Kai spicey red peppers. Or there was the asparagus and miso that I steamed with some Kai vermouth. Thanks, Kai! Check out Kai's food blog (which she apparently can't access from China due to censorship), and also her Wikipedia Ham page and now you have an excuse to go visit it :P
OK, one more pointer must be made to Degan Beley's Vancouver ethnic eats blog. She's been consistently posting reviews of various places around town, with good "real person" write ups and lots of pictures.

I'm very glad to hear you got good use out of some of the foods! What I'd give to have access to some of those ingredients... drool.. Wish I could have sampled some of your creations, which sounded scrumptious! btw. I can finally access my food blog and others, including yours, with the acquiring of a VPN application.. YAY!!
Oh, and many thanks for the mention too B-man!
